Mount Baker Wall Mural
Mount Baker Wall Mural

This mural is one of five murals in my own home. The walls of the sitting room are patent yellow with white trim and the mural was designed to integrate into these existing colors. The overall evening glow of the scene and tree borders on both the left and right enable the scene to blend in with the original wall color.

The mural design objective was to create a scene based on a modern America landscape (note the ferry and subtle architectural elements), while at the same time using a palette and approach that would give the mural the traditional look of earlier American and European murals, such as seen in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century country estates. The composition follows the approach used in classicism that later gave birth to the term "picturesque," that is, a distant light background contrasted with a darker foreground and some architectural or human interest in the mid area. While the palette is traditional, the technique is more impressionistic.

This scene is of Mount Baker as seen from Puget Sound, or more exactly, from the elevation south of Edmonds' city center, Washington.
