Laguna Celesta

The client chose the name "Laguna Celesta" to capture the combination of scenery on the four walls and constellations painted in the ceiling dome. The subject matter and subdued cool colors were chosen to give this meditation room a tranquil and relaxed feeling and create a slightly mystical and exotic ambiance ideal for reflection and meditation. The mural offers the viewer an ideal panoramic tropical laguna with foreground trees, mountain views, and a dome with accurate representations of the constellations and planets.
The initial idea was to have a surrounding forest of trees or of four trees, one in each corner. Because the room is small sketches were also prepared including several with distant views that would make the room feel larger. Detailed sketches of the room were sent as email attachments (PDF files) to the client in Florida. After several rounds of revisions the sketches were finalized and approved. I then flew there

to prepare the room and do the installation.
In the course of preparing sketches, a subtle representation of a temple was suggested to add additional visual interests and make the mural more "Orientalists" in theme, in keeping with the tradition of murals with Orientalists themes that have been popular in Europe for centuries. The spectacular and mysterious 8th-century temple Borobudar in Java, first encountered by Europeans in the nineteenth century, was chosen as a model. During installation, the client requested an additional temple for the other side of the mural modeled on one the client had visited while vacationing in Bali. The mural was further personalized for the client after one evening when we were observing overhead the unusual configuration of five visible planets that occurred in April of 2004. This rare line up of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter were included in the constellations painted on the ceiling.
